The dolerites in the Cradock district of the Eastern Cape are somewhat famous for two reasons. Firstly, some contain gold, silver and copper mineralization associated with secondary prehnite that occurs with the dolerite. A few of these gold occurrences were exploited during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The second reason the Karoo dolerites at Cradock are well known, amongst mineral collectors, is the existence of prehnite. The Cradock locality is given as the type-locality for prehnite where it was discovered in the late 18th Century, supposedly by Colonel Prehn. There is some question as to whether this is true or not, i.e., whether the prehnite from Cradock is indeed the type-material, or whether the specimens came from somewhere else in the Karoo regions where dolerites are pervasive and prehnite is a relatively common associated mineral.
