Tunnel Schio-Valdagno (Traforo Schio-Valdagno), Provincia di Vicenza (Vicentino), Veneto, Italia

Various minerals in different petrologic environments were found during the construction of this tunnel (during the period 1991-1999).

Nodules of pyrite crystals were typically found in carbon-rich black shales of the Bonarelli Level (the distinctive marker bed at the top of Scaglia Variegata Alpina Formation). The overlying Turonian-Maastrichtian Scaglia Rossa Formation, comprised of pinkish-reddish marly and cherty limestones, yielded remarkable specimens of calcite, with honey-yellow scalenohedral crystals up to 4 cm. Transparent, blue-green crystal of vivianite were found in rocks of the Scaglia Rossa transition zone towards the contact with Paleogene volcanoclastites.

Calcite and hydroxyapophyllite-(K) were found in cavities and veins inside Cenozoic volcanic dykes, consisting of basalts and basaltic breccia. Associated minerals include thaumasite, zeolites, prehnite, and, occasionally, also greenockite, gyrolite, and okenite.
