Föhrenberg is the name given to the south side of a mountain in the southwestern Kaiserstuhl. The west side of this mountain is called Winklerberg. Together with two outlying hills near Breisach, it forms the southernmost past of the Kaiserstuhl.
The mountain consists of tephritic lava flows which crop out in the Föhrenberg area and also form a high cliff above the vineyards in the southern Winklerberg area. Until the 1970s, when major landscaping operations were carried out in the area to increase the size of the vineyards, the Föhrenberg was one of the most productive Opal-AN ("Hyalite") localities in the Kaiserstuhl. Today, only small samples can be found. In addition, the rock contains black augite crystals (rich in titanium) and white masses and crusts of calcite as veinlets and fissure fillings.
