Tai Mo To; 大磨刀洲; Tai O Formation
Massive graphite used to be mined here between 1952 and 1971 on a relatively large scale (1,000 tons a month of ore running over 80% graphite; by 1964, the mine workings had reached 90 m below sea level).
The graphite was created by metamorphism of a carbon-rich sedimentary rock originally deposited over 320 million years ago.
Some hills on West Brother Island have now been cut down to facilitate aviation at the nearby Hong Kong International Airport (West Brother Is. lies north of Lantau island, between the international airport and Tuen Mun).
