Host Rock Unit: Calumet And Hecla Conglomerate, Portage Lake Volcanics
Host Rock: Conglomerate
An underground copper mine consisting of two shafts located near Calumet. The Tamarack Jr. was a company that was affiliated with the Tamarack Mining Company and began exploration of the western boundary with the Centennial Mining Company in 1882. The rich Calumet Conglomerate was discovered through diamond drilling at approximately 3,000 feet depth and work began around 1884 on sinking two shafts to reach the ore. Once the shafts reached the conglomerate, considerable drifting and stoping was done with negative results. It was discovered that this portion of the conglomerate was very poor in copper and all work was idled in 1895. The Osceola Mining Company took over the mine in 1897 and then was absorbed by Calumet and Hecla in 1902. No further activity is noted after this point. Some copper can be found at what is left of the rock piles.
