A fireball was seen by herdsmen and sounds were heard over an area extending to 25 km from the impact site. A single stone of mass 4.85 kg, partially covered by a thin fusion crust, was recovered and sent to the Geological Survey of Nigeria. It smelt strongly of sulphur when first received. Mayo Belwa is one of 9 recovered aubrites (enstatite achondrites) which were observed to fall. The meteorite has been heavily shocked in its past (an impact melt breccia).
