Poniklá is a municipality and village in Semily District in the Liberec Region of the Czech Republic.
Residual limonitic ore accumulations in the vicinity of Poniklá are connected with epizonal metamorphic palaeozoic rocks (carbonatic and graphitic phyllites and crystalline limestones) of the Poniklá Group. They probably originate from iron-rich rocks during weathering in Oligocene to Miocene (depth of weathering up to 60 m). Major ore mineral is "limonite" accompanied by quartz. The output of this area was more than 56000 t of ore (20-30% Fe). Mines were abandoned by 1850 - ironworks burned down and have never been reconstructed.
Note on the mineral list:
- According to Škoda nad Rus (2010) all dufrenites from this locality should be considered natrodufrenites;
- According to Jirásek and Matýsek (2010) all limonites (and possibly cacoxenites) from this locality should be considered goethites.
