I was an intense collector in my youth until my interest in the opposite gender began to interfere, about 1958. That collection went to Emory University, Atlanta when I went off to Georgia Tech a few years later. I began again collecting again after 34 years, in the early 1990s, then more seriously when I retired from the U.S. Foreign Service in 1995. I have been active in Friends of Mineralogy on both the national level and in its quite vigorous Pacific NW Chapter, and have been on the board on and off for many years of the the Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals. My wife is an active partner in collecting. We have been invited exhibitors at Tucson for many years, and dabble in field collecting in Colorado and occasionally elsewhere. We seek aesthetics, lack of damage and mineralogical interest in specimens from miniature to small cabinet sizes. We are interested in all species but increasingly are focussed on our specialities.
The barite suite is large (over 500 specimens), from many localities. I try to be very careful with localities, and run a non-commercial barite reference site for collectors and dealers, www.baritespecimenlocalities.org. I contributed to the Best of Species Message Board, notably baryte, as it is quaintly called, but had to give that up for lack of time.
Our other extensive suite is smithsonite (many featured in the extraLapis English smithsonite issue), closely followed by sphalerite, prehnite and the minerals of Mali.
Classical music is the center of our retirement interest, from opera to chamber music. I have been active on the board of a major American chamber music festival, Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Oregon, and also on the board of a community orchestra and we attend some 40 classical music events each year. I played oboe for 30 years and switched to bassoon a few years ago. I currently play bassoon in two community orchestras.
