I have been studying geology for longer than I can remember. I'm not joking about that. My father is a geologist and I grew up quite literally following in his footsteps. I was so fascinated with all the things he taught me that I decided to make geology my career as well. I earned my undergraduate degree at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech). I did my graduate studies at New Mexico Tech and Michigan Technological University. I worked at the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources (now the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources) and I have taught various geology courses at Michigan Tech, the University of Wisconsin-- Eau Claire, and the University of Nevada Las Vegas. I currently teach at a community college in Texas.

I don't really have a place I call home. I grew up all over the world and have travelled quite a bit since then. I enjoy seeing new places and fascinating geology. I have often said my favourite place is that point on the horizon where the world ends and dreams begin. It seems I have spent much of my life trying to get there. I know I never will, but it does not stop me from the attempt and I must say, the journey thus far has been fantastic.

I am an old-fashioned jack of all trades, master of none geologist. Over the years my research focus has varied depending upon my interests and, of course, funding. Currently I am able to focus on the aspect of geology I find most fascinating, geoarchaeology.

When I am not teaching or working on research, I enjoy spending time with my amazing husband (Capt. Paul Brandes) and writing fiction novels under the name Nat Brandes.
