The mineral is named to honor the well-known Russian mineralogist, doctor of mineralogy Yury Leonidovich Orlov (Юрий Леонидович Орлов) (4 February 1926, Moscow, USSR – 30 August 1980, Moscow, USSR), Director (1976–1980) of the A.E. Fersman Mineralogical museum, RAS, specialist in the mineralogy of diamonds and gem stones, and author of more than 50 works including the classical monographs “Mineralogy of Diamond” and “Morphology of Diamond”.
