Name:
to honor Alfred (Fred) DeVito (1937–2004) for many years one of California's leading micromounters and field collectors.
Unique combination of elements. Structurally related to yoshimuraite in terms of Ba and PO4 configuration.

The structure is based on HOH astrophyllite-type layers, with Ti replaced by [5]Fe3+. There is a peripheral A2pBrWA2 layer of the (PO4)2(CO3) composition. Phosphate, carbonate and barium ions are located in the interlayer space.

Type Occurrence of DevitoiteHide

General Appearance of Type Material:
Individual crystals can reach 5 mm in length and 0.3 mm in width, but are generally much smaller, and their thickness rarely exceeds 1 μm, Crystals invariably occur in subparallel intergrowths.
Place of Conservation of Type Material:
The four cotype specimens used in the description of the mineral are housed in the mineral collection of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (catalogue numbers 61591,61592, 61593 and 61594).
Geological Setting of Type Material:
very late product of the interaction of fluids with sanbornite-quartz vein. It occurs along cleavage planes of altered gillespite.
