The mineral now known as dollaseite-(Ce) was first described by Geijer in 1927 as “magnesium ortit”, based upon the high Mg content he found in some of the allanites (orthite) from the Östanmossa mine, Röberg ore field, Norberg, Västmanland County, Sweden. He considered this mineral as the Mg-analogue of allanite-(Ce). Peacor and Dunn (1988) re-investigates material corresponding to Geijer’s "magnesium ortit" using modern methods. They found an elevated content of Mg in their material compared to what would be expected in the the Mg analogue of allanite-(Ce), finding nor only a Fe2+ <-> Mg2+ substitution one would expect from the Mg analogue of allanite, but also a Mg2+F- <->Al3+O2- substitution, giving a new mineral, dollaseite-(Ce)

Morphology:
Massive. Subhedral crystals, often in contact with carbonate. Also radiating, aggregates of lath-like crystals that are simple twinned crystals. The laths may be extremely thin, even at high magnification, such that the aggregate is a fibrous felt.
