Chlorophaeite

A valid IMA mineral species - grandfathered - questionable
This page is currently not sponsored. Click here to sponsor this page.
Formula:
(Ca,Mg,Fe)2Fe2Si4O13 · 10H2O
This material is of uncertain status. It was considered "possibly a chlorite" by Hey (1955) and Clark, 1993 - "Hey's Mineral Index".

However a study by Srodo et al (2019) indicated it to vary optically from isotropic to birefringent and to have XRD patterns consistent with a mixture of "Fe-montmorillonite and Fe-saponite, identical with griffithite and oxysmectites, probably preceded by a finer-grained ferrosaponite at the isotropic stage." Their XRD patterns indicate a mixture of dioctahedral and trioctahedral smectites, and the compositions (~(Ca0 · 1,Mg0 · 4,Al0 · 3,Fe1 · 1)Si3 · 8Al0 · 2O11)indicate essentially a hydrous iron silicate, with subordinate Mg, Al and Ca. The composition, optics and XRD patterns are very similar to hisingerite.

Originally described from Isle of Rhum, North West Highlands (Inverness-shire), Scotland, UK. This type material needs to be retested before we can confirm its identity.
