Named in honor of Dr. Irmgard Abs-Wurmbach (19 December 1938 - 8 April 2020), Institut für Mineralogie, Ruhr Universität, Bochum, Germany, in recognition of her research on braunite.
Forms a series with braunite. The third approved Cu-Mn silicate mineral, as such somewhat similar to dixenite and stavelotite-(La).
