About Calciobetafite (of Mazzi & Munno)Hide

Formula:
(Ca,Na)2(Nb,Ti)2(O,OH)7
Name:
For a mineral with the betafite structure with high CALCIum content.
A variety of Pyrochlore Group

A dicredited mineral, earlier defined as a betafite. According to the new nomenclature of the Pyrochlore Supergroup (Atencio et al. 2010) "betafite" is defined as a calcium-rich and Ti-dominant pyrochlore. The type calciobetafite is Nb-dominant, not Ti-dominant and belongs to the pyrochlore group).

Hogarth (1977) defined betafite as a uranium-rich Ti-dominant pyrochlore, hence the origin of calciobetafite, a calcium-dominant Ti-rich pyrochlore (Mazzi & Munno 1983). However, all published analytical data on (non-defect) betafite have Ca in excess of U [except the mineral from the Moon studied by Mokhov et al. (2008), which is oxyuranobetafite]. This renders the name calciobetafite redundant, and has the added effect of bringing members of the betafite group in line with the other groups (Atencio et al. 2010).

Classification of Calciobetafite (of Mazzi & Munno)Hide

Discredited
Approval History:
Approved by IMA in 1982, as calciobetafite= an uranium-rich Ti-dominant pyrochlore.
Discredited by IMA 2012 (Atencio et al. 2010, 2012 IMA Report)
18.4.10

18 : Niobates and Tantalates
4 : Niobates and tantalates containing both U and rare earths
