About Epidote SupergroupHide

A2M3(Si2O7)(SiO4)O(OH)
Name:
After the principal member of the group.
A supergroup of monoclinic sorosilicates with the general formula given above.
It is following the revision of nomenclature, changes and content published by Armbruster et al. (2006) with the modifications done by IMA (Proposal 09A, Mills et al. 2009). It is thus not identical with the now historical "epidote group", though there are some similiarities.

The nomenclature is based on the occupancy of the five A and M sites.
A sites (A1, A2): large, high-coordination cations such as Ca, Mn2+, Sr or large REE3+.
M sites (M1, M2, M3): octahedrally-coordinated, trivalent (occasionally divalent) cations such as Al3+, Fe3+, Mn3+, Fe2+ and Mg2+. More rare elements entering the M site are Ga, Zn, Cu, and possibly Ti4+.
The detailed structural formula is {A1A2}{M1M2M3}(Si2O7)(SiO4)O(OH).
