Rhenium is a silver-white transition metal, and is one of the rarest elements in the Earth's crust.
It is primarily obtained as a by-product when processing other ores, primarily molybdenum and copper ores.
It is used to create high-temperature superalloys - 70% of the worldwide production goes towards making jet-engine parts - and as a catalyst in refining petroleum products.
