Formula:
Pb2Cu+(OH)2I3
Colour:
Yellow
Crystal System:
Orthorhombic
A natural halocuprate(I) from the prolific Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia. Likely a near-future new mineral.
As crystalline aggregates, 0.1 mm in size, associated with cuprite, galena, and marshite. Likely syngenetic (not postdating) with marshite.
The structure contains cubane-like [Pb4(OH)4]4+ core coordinated to 16 I- ions. Cu+ ions occur within edge-sharing tetrahedra in the iodide motif forming [Cu2I6]4- dimers. There are likely double Cu=Cu bonds.
No synthetic analogue is known. The find of the phase suggests an existence of a new class of halocuprates.
