Named in honor of Witold Stanisław Żabiński (17 July 1929, Kraków, Poland – 15 January 2007), one of the most eminent Polish mineralogists, one of the founders of the Mineralogical Society of Poland and its President in 1980–1994. He was also a professor, head of the Department of Mineralogy and Geochemistry, and Director of the Institute of Geology and Mineral Materials WGP AGH. He authored over 200 papers and textbooks.
The second Ta-bearing silicate mineral after holtite. Isostructural with triclinic modification of titanite, see triclinic titanite . Identical to titanite and other titanite group species in terms of bond topology.

Titanites associated with żabińskiite are (Al,Ta,Nb)-bearing and (Al,F)-bearing.

General Appearance of Type Material:
Compositionally inhomogeneous aggregates (with titanite and K-mica), ca. 120 × 70 μm in size
Place of Conservation of Type Material:
Type material is deposited in the collections of the Mineralogical Museum of the University of Wrocław (Faculty of Earth Science and Environmental Management, Institute of Geological Sciences, Mineralogical Museum, 50-205 Wrocław, Cybulskiego 30, Poland),
Geological Setting of Type Material:
Variscan granitic pegmatite; formed together with (Al,Ta,Nb)-bearing titanites, from Ca-contaminated fluxed melts or early hydrothermal fluids, during increasing a(Ti) & a(Nb) but decreasing a(Ta), almost paralelly to polycrase-(Y) and euxenite-(Y)
