Name:
in allusion to chemistry (Greek world μηναζ means the Moon, which is indicative for selenium)
The second simple zinc selenate (selenite) mineral after sofiite (prewittite is also a selenate mineral containing Zn, among other metals). Closely associated with sofiite, with pseudomorphic relationship.

The natural β phase of ZnSeO3; the structure is of the CuSeO3 type and is based on layers of Zn2O8 dimers, that result from sharing edges of ZnO5 trigonal bipyramids. Each dimer has four common vertices with its neighbour dimer. Selenate groups, in which selenium has trigonal pyramidal coordination, bind the layers to form an open framework.
