The pargasite root name originates from the locality in the Pargas Valley ( now Parainen) given in 1814 by Count Fabian Gotthard von Steinheil for the locality in the Pargas Valley, Finland. {Note: Count Fabian Gotthard von Steinheil is not well-known as a mineralogist. He was Governor General of Finland in 1810. Steinheilite was named for him by Johan Gadolin, also in 1814.}
The mineral was originally named fluoro-potassicpargasite (Oberti et al. 2010) , but was later renamed potassic-fluoro-pargasite to comply with the guidelines set forth in teh amphibole nomenclature report of 2012 ( Hawthorne et al 2012)
