Formula:
{K}{Ca2}{Mg4Al}(Al2Si6O22)F2
Pargasite is defined as a pargasite group member with the following dominant elements:
A position: K
C position: Mg as the dominant divalent cation and Al as the dominant trivalent cation.
W position: F as the dominant anion
Colour:
brownish-black
Lustre:
Vitreous

Crystal System:
Monoclinic
Name:
The pargasite root name originates from the locality in the Pargas Valley ( now Parainen) given in 1814 by Count Fabian Gotthard von Steinheil for the locality in the Pargas Valley, Finland. {Note: Count Fabian Gotthard von Steinheil is not well-known as a mineralogist. He was Governor General of Finland in 1810. Steinheilite was named for him by Johan Gadolin, also in 1814.}

The mineral was originally named fluoro-potassicpargasite (Oberti et al. 2010) , but was later renamed potassic-fluoro-pargasite to comply with the guidelines set forth in teh amphibole nomenclature report of 2012 ( Hawthorne et al 2012)
