From greek for quick, ταχυς, and spring off, αφαλτος, because the mineral was easily detached from the pegmatite when struck.
Synonym:
A synonym of Zircon
Name introduced by P.C Weibye in 1849, and described by Berlin (1853) for a metamict, altered zircon that occurred as dark reddish-brown crystals in a granite pegmatite hosted in a gneis near Kragerø, Telemark, Norway.
