Named in honor of Mario Egidio Teruggi (18 February 1919, Dolores, Argentina - 22 August 2002, La Plata, Argentina), professor of Geology, Universidad Nacional La Plata, Argentina. He made significant contributions to the sedimentology and petrology of Argentina. Pronounced tay-roo-gite.
