Named in honor of Hans Eduard Suess (29 December 1909, Vienna, Austria - 20 September 1993, La Jolla, California, USA), physical chemist, nuclear physicist, and professor of chemistry, University of California at San Diego, USA in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of cosmochemistry and meteoritics. He received the V. M. Goldschmidt Award in 1974.
