Named in 1952 by Waldemar Berdesinki in honor of Hermann Max Bruno Sander [February 23, 1884 Innsbruck, Austria - September 5, 1979 Innsbruck, Austria], structural petrologist who specialized in Central Alps geology, Professor of Mineralogy, Austrian Geological Institute, Vienna, Austria.
A synthetic Fe-analogue is known.
