About Rinkite-(Ce)Hide

03002130015218504291793.jpg
Henrik J. Rink
Formula:
(Ca3Ce)Na(NaCa)Ti(Si2O7)2(OF)F2
Colour:
Yellowish-brown, yellow; brown
Lustre:
Vitreous
Hardness:
5
Specific Gravity:
3.18 - 3.44
Crystal System:
Monoclinic
Name:
Named as rinkite by Lorenzen (1884) for a mineral found in material collected by K.J.V. Steenstrup in the years 1874, 1876 and 1877 at Kangerdluarssuk area, Ilímaussaq complex, Greenland. The exact locality is not known. The name is in honor of Henrik Johannes Rink (26 August 1819 Copenhagen, Denmark - 15 December 1893 Christiania, Norway), at the time Director of the Royal Greenland Board of Trade.
Name was changed by IMA in 2016 from rinkite to rinkite-(Ce) (IMA 16-A). See Sokolova and Cámara 2017.
See also Mosandrite-(Ce).

The crystal structure of rinkite was established by Galli and Alberti (1971). Some authors (Fleischer 1958, 1987; Sokolova & Cámara, 2008, etc.) have argued that rinkite is identical with mosandrite. However, reinvestigation of mosandrite by Bellezza et al. (2009) showed that mosandrite differs from rinkite in chemical composition, with low Ca, Na and F contents and a high amount of H2O.
