Named in 1878 by William Garrow Lettsom from the Greek, ραβδοζ, a rod, plus φαιυεσθαι, to appear, in allusion to the bands characteristically exhibited in its spectrum, plus the suffix "-(Ce)" indicating the dominance of Ce over other REE in this species.
