Named by Hans Rudoph Hermann in 1862 in honor of Dimitrii Ivanovich Planer (Дмитрия Ивановича Планера) (1821-1882), mineralogist and former Director, Gumeshevsk copper mines, Polevskoi, Russia, who discovered the species some distance east of those mines.
