Named in 1982 by Kurt Walenta, Martina Zwiener and Pete J. Dunn in honor of Helmuth Richard Hermann Adolf Friedrich von Philipsborn [August 3, 1892, Berlin, Germany - October 19, 1983, Regensburg, Germany], professor of mineralogy, University of Bonn, Germany
The lead analogue of arsenocrandallite and arsenogoyazite, and the arsenate analogue of plumbogummite.

Forms solid solutions with the arsenate-sulphate member hidalgoite.
