Named in 1940 by Martin Alfred Peacock and Alexander Stewart Dadson from the Greek παρά = beyond and rammelsbergite, because of its relationship to the root mineral.
The low-temperature polymorph of NiAs2.

The crystal structure is transitional between the marcasite and pyrite structures (Fleet, 1972).
