Named in honor of Sergei Nikolaevich Britvin (Сергея Николаевича Бритвина) (b. 1965), a Russian mineralogist at St. Petersburg State University with a wide range of scientific interests, including the mineralogy of skarn deposits.
Closely related to molybdophyllite.

Originally named "Molybdophyllite-18 Å" by Charalampides (1994).
