Named by Charles Upham Shepard in 1865 to replace spartaite of Breithaupt, because his spartaite was nearly identical to spartalite of Henry Brook and Hugh Miller.

A synonym of Manganese-bearing Calcite
A white calcite with a 6-7 weight percent of MnO. Generally fluorescent red in SW UV.
