Named by Anna Garavelli, Nadezhda N. Mozgova, Paolo Orlandi, Elena Bonaccorsi, Daniela Pinto, Yves Moelo, and Yuri S. Borodaev in 2005 in honor of Filippo Vurro (2 July 1940, Bari, Italy - ), professor of mineralogy, University of Bari, for his work on the mineralogy and geochemistry of modern volcanic deposits.
