Named after Prof. Dr. Kurt Mereiter, Technical University of Vienna, in honour of his contributions to the crystal chemistry of various iron sulfates.
The iron analogue of Leonite.

May possibly appear as a dehydration product of the (unstable at room temperature) picromerite-type hexahydrate (a Tutton salt).
