Named in 1975 by Olaf Medenbach and Karl Schmetzer in honor of Friedrich Wilhelm Kegel [1874 Hettstedt, eastern Harz, Mansfeld-Südharz, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany - 8 August, 1948 Landschlacht, Münsterlingen, Kreuzlingen, Thurgau, Switzerland], Director of mining operations (1922-1938) at Tsumeb, Namibia.
