Named in 1980 by Bozidar Darko Sturman and Pete J. Dunn in honor of Robert Irwin Gait [b. September 12, 1938], mineralogist, Curator of the mineral and gem collection (1967-1996), Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, Ontario, for his contributions to mineralogy and curatorial excellence.
