About CollophaneHide

Name:
Named in 1870 by Karl Ludwig Fridolin von Sandberger from the Greek roots κολλα (= glue) and φαινεσθαι (to appear) referring to the appearance of the mineral.
A variety of Carbonate-rich Apatite

A name used for the massive, cryptocrystalline, colloidal (amorphous) varieties of Carbonate-rich Fluorapatite or Carbonate-rich Hydroxylapatite, such as those that constitute the bulk of phosphate rock and fossil bone. The original material was carbonate-rich hydroxylapatite, but the name was subsequently used indiscriminately.

Often appears opaline or horn-like, with a dense, layered or colloform structure; concretionary, nodular, spherulitic, or pulverulent at times.
