Mineral Photographyhelicon Focus best rendering mode

24th Jan 2018 04:17 UTCKyle Kustka

hello recently i have been using Helicon focus to created focus stacked pictures and noticed there are three rendering modes for focus stacking. I just want to hear some peoples opinions on whether weighted average, depth map, or pyramid are better for taking pictures of mineral specimens?

thank you for reading :)

It’s not as sinple as that because it depends on the photos, some work better with one more and some with others. In many cases I have used both depth map and pyramid with the same stack and edited the two resulting images with photoshop to merge best parts of each image.

That's exactly my regular workflow. Pyramid produces more contrasty images and less halos along edges, but enhances noise and is really bad with specular highlights which are horribly blooming. These are usually the parts which I mask in from a depth map stack. You can do this with the retouching function, but as Jolyon, I prefer to do that in Photoshop because every step is reversible.
