A Hg-Cr-Mg-gemstone mining area 15 miles (24.14 km) long by 9 miles (14.48 km) wide, at the southern end of the Diablo Range of the California Coast Ranges, estimated at the center of T18S, R12E (accuracy ± 3 miles (4.83 km)). Discovered in 1853 by 2 Mexican prospectors.
Note: This district is home to a wide variety of mineral occurrences. Many localities are "specimen" sites and are poorly documented with geographic coordinates and are described only in general terms such as "Clear Creek area." Linear features like Clear Creek and the San Benito River are generally poor features to relate occurrences to, since they traverse wide areas of territory. Therefore, the use of these features is intentionally minimized in locality name strings, but they are mentioned, if relevant, in the locality description field.
The deposits are within or along the border of the New Idria serpentine body (serpentinite). The principal ore mineral is cinnabar, with minor amounts of metacinnabar and native mercury. Controls for ore emplacement included faults/fractures of sediments and the alteration in serpentine and Panoche rocks. The minerals occur along cracks and veins in Franciscan and Panoche sedimentary rocks that have been hardened by hydrothermal action and in silica-carbonate rock, the hydrothermal alteration of serpentine. Alteration also includes the induration of rocks of the Panoche Formation. Local rocks within the district include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 3 (Coast Ranges and Western Klamath Mountains).
Regional geologic structures include a series of anticlines and synclines trending N70W. Local structures include the Coalinga anticline, a NW extension of one of the folds in the region.
