Staurolite from
Dusky Sound, Fiordland National Park, Southland District, Southland Region, New Zealand

Classification
Species:Staurolite
Formula:Fe22+Al9Si4O23(OH)
Comments:Occurs in two different environments
1)As a Mg-rich variety with magnesiostaurolite in up to 200 μm in a partially metamorphosed ultrabasic rock which was probably a hornblende olivine gabbronorite prior to metamorphism.

2) as a chromian variety as trace quantities in two specimens of amphibole-rich rock from a distinctive lithostratigraphic unit generally about 20 m thick, it is inferred that the unit is probably a metatuff of unusual composition. The composition of the chrome rich variety corresponds to (Mg1.04,Fe2+2.509Zn0.217)(Al17.308,Cr0.445)(Si7.664O44(OH,O)2 + minor amounts of V, Mn, Cu and Ti
