Species: | Epsomite |
Formula: | MgSO4 · 7H2O |
Comments: | Epsomite was found growing in saline solutions inside and at the base of salt-crust pressure ridges (which grew up to 30-40cm high) at the northern end of the lake.
The largest individual prisms were about 4cm long and 1cm wide, a few also being double terminated, but most were clustered in flat platy aggregates from growing on the bottom of the saline pools.
Crystals were transparent to translucent and colourless to a very pale grey.
The tabular white crystals found here and commonly traded as epsomite, are mostly glauberite, variably altered to gypsum ( R Bottrill, XRD). |
