The Elder Canyon deposits are located in the W½ sec. 2, T9S, R4E, SBM, near the Riverside County line, within the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park boundaries.
The deposits are gemstone-bearing pegmatites. The principal deposit is a tourmaline-bearing dike that is exposed along the east side of Elder (Alder) Canyon. The dike strikes northward, dips west, and is exposed laterally for about 1500 feet.
The area was first prospected by Charles Clark and Orville Bixley during the late 1920's, who reportedly mined and sold a small quantity of gem-quality beryl. Explored by a few shallow cuts.
