The Black Jack was one of the early leases on the Menzies Goldfield, and was worked continuously from 1895 to 1913.
It was initially developed by the Lady Main Company, sinking a shaft to 187 feet on a 2 foot wide, north-west to south-east trending reef. There is also a 12 foot wide kaolin and conglomerate lode all being gold bearing. A crushing was taken out amounting to 112 ounces 13 dwt. Dis-satisfied with the result, the company abandoned the lease.
Prospectors Spalholz and Evans took over and produced about 1000 tonnes of ore from the old company workings. In 1907, G. Henderson and Hurley took over the mine, and opened a 300 foot long ore shoot north of the southern workings. This produced approximately 500 ounces of gold. By 1913 this shoot had petered out at depth.
In 1997, a small shallow pit was dug at the site (since filled in) on a near surface laterite oxide lode, obtaining 24 000 tonnes of ore at 2.61 g/t yielding 2021 ounces of gold. A line of shafts exists for other historic leases to the south, and minor workings to a limited extent north of the Black Jack Mine.
The mine is five kilometres south of Menzies, and 1 kilometre east of the Goldfields Highway.
