A former underground Cu-Ag-Au group of claims/mines located in the N½ sec. 3, T4S, R29E, and in the S½ sec. 34, and the W½ & NE¼ sec. 35, T3S, R29E, 2.5 miles NE of Metcalf along the east side of Placer Gulch, on private land. 16 unpatented claims totalling 320 acres comprised the Celtic group, which later became part of the Veiled Prophet group of 30 patented claims. First produced in 1906. Operators included Owen Morris; W.H. McDonald; Dan Lynch; Celtic Copper Co; Archibald Morrison; and Captain Thomson.
30 Veiled Prophet claims extend from just NE of Rocky Gulch divide in sec. 3 through the south half of sec. 34 and the north half of sec. 35 bordering Placer Gulch. UTM and geodetic coordinated describe central adit in cluster of prospects in the NE quarter of sec. 35 (these are the original Celtic group claims.
Mineralization is irregular bodies of low-grade ore striking NE and dipping 70NW, at 3.05 meters wide. Ore control was NE-trending, well-defined fissure veins along contacts in porphyry stock. Ore concentration was mineralization along fissure veins with irregular bodies extending into porphyry; replacements of granite and porphyry. Surface alteration exists to unknown depths. The porphyry is greatly bleached by sericitization and extensively cemented by quartz veinlets. A Substantial amount of crushing of granite and porphyry occurred during fissure formation. Regional surface ore deposits consist of malachite and other oxidized minerals which are replaced at depths of 200 feet or less by secondary chalcocite. Primary ores at depth consist of pyrite and chalcopyrite.
Area structures include NE-trending narrow porphyry dikes. Veins consist of many very sharply defined fissure planes striking NNE. Monzonite porphyry is fragmented by masses of quartzite, limestone, and shale.
Tectonic component is the Copper King Massif and block faulting NW of the massif with a downthrow of about 1000 feet.
Workings included one 65 foot deep shaft. 1921 assay values averaged 9% Cu and 17 oz Ag/t.
