Mineralization is an irregular ore body (linear) hosted in the Longfellow Limestone (and Pinkard Sandstone and Shale). Associated rock units are the Morenci Granite Porphyry and the Coronado Quartzite. Ore control was a NE-trending small fault fissure between granite on the south and quartzite on the north. Ore concentration was intense surface leaching; supergene enrichment concentration in ore pockets along altered quartz veins. Alteration is intense surface oxidation to unknown depths and the formation of gossans. The limestone is greatly altered to epidote and magnetite with copper stains and pyrite. Irregular deposits of gold are contained in limonite along the vein. The vein follows epidotized contact of a porphyry dike in limestone.

The above describes the Keating deposits. The geology of the Dover Mine deposits associated with the Coronado vein is similar (see USGS Professional Paper 43, 1905).; The Tucky Mine is located on a late Tertiary replacement vein in the Longfellow Limestone.

The Keating Mine is located on the Keating vein; the Dover Mines are located on the western prong of the Coronado vein.

Area structures include step-faulting along veins in the locality. E-trending diabasic and granite porphyry dike intrusives into quartzite and limestones. Principal intrusions occurred parallel to the planes of sedimentation, which dip 10°-30° SW. At the mouth of Pinkard Gulch, the limestone is locally altered to garnet near porphyry contacts. The Gold Belt vein parallels a granite porphyry dike. The mines are approximately 0.25 miles south of the Copperplate Fault. The fault block under the Gold Belt property has been upthrown 1500 feet.

Tectonic component is the Coronado Granite Massif, the Gold Gulch Fault Block and the transition zone between the Basin and Range and Colorado Plateau Provinces, as well as the southeastern Arizona Tertiary volcanic flows.
