A W occurrence/prospect located 10.3 km (6.4 miles) ENE of Banner in SE1/4 SEC 22 T12S R5E SBM, at N33.11132 W116.45035, elevation 2’320 feet.
Mineralization is hosted in schist and granitoid rocks.
From 1951 to 1956 a number tungsten (scheelite) prospects and claims were located on the slopes of the Grapevine Mountain. Scheelite fluoresces under UV-light and prospectors invested in “black lights”. In daylight they searched for tactite, marble and schist. In the darkness they examined these metamorphic rocks with the “black light”, hoping to detect fluorescent blue spots. Scheelite might be accompanied by brown grossular, green diopside, white wollastonite, calcite, quartz, zoisite, clinozoisite and idocrase. This is the reason why these prospects were also visited by mineral collectors.
A typical example is the San Felipe Garnet Mine, which was never a mine, but started as a prospect and later became a location for mineral collectors till it was included in the Anza Borrego Desert State Park which does not permit collection of minerals.
