Name(s) in local language(s):
La mina El Teniente

The El Teniente mine (meaning "The Lieutenant") is worked by Codelco Company (Codelco División El Teniente) on a porphyry copper deposit, ca. 50 km E of Rancagua. Core or plug of an extinct volcano. Known for its very large gypsum crystals, including one measuring l0 ft. x 30 in (3 meters x 80 cm.)
The name Braden Mine name was used before 1973.
Reportedly the world's biggest underground copper mine.
Mining is assumed to have started already in 1819.

Geochronology

Mineralization age: Neogene : 6.34 Ma to 4.4 Ma

Important note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded below and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
