A former lode Au-Mn-Fe occurrence/mine located in the N½SW¼ sec. 15, T17N, R9E, MDM, about 3.2 km SSW of Lake City, on the N canyon wall of the South Yuba River (2½ miles SSE of North Columbia). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.
Mineralization is hosted in porphyry and diabase. The ore body is comprised of seams & stringers. Controls for ore emplacement included faults. Gossan of Fe & Mn oxides in irregular areas coating the surface. Associated rocks belong o the Calaveras Formation. Local alteration includes highly altered dikes to soft, cumbly porphtyritic rock rich in hematite and limonite. Associated rocks include slate, argillite & chert. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 6 (Northwestern Sierra Nevada) and/or Mesozoic volcanic rocks, unit 2 (Western Sierra Foothills and Western Klamath Mountains).
Local geologic structure: Dikes at 2 to 10 feet thick cut associated rocks, which strike N To N45W and dip 60NE to nearly vertical.
Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of tunnels, shafts & drifts.
$1,200 (period values) in specimen ore was reported. Gouge reported to contain less than 10% MnO.
