A crushed stone quarry located in the SE¼ sec. 23, T2N, R6W, MDM, 0.8 km (0.5 mile; 2,600 feet) N of San Rafael center, at the end of Quarry Road. Operated by Jensen and Pitts. This quarry was in operation as early as 1893 and probably most of the stone from it was quarried prior to 1913. It is currently/recently used for fill material. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.

Material is chert. Local rocks include rocks of the Franciscan melange.

Workings include surface openings. The chert is removed from the upper benches with a rooter and is hauled away in trucks.

Regional Geology

This geological map and associated information on rock units at or nearby to the coordinates given for this locality is based on relatively small scale geological maps provided by various national Geological Surveys. This does not necessarily represent the complete geology at this locality but it gives a background for the region in which it is found.

Description: Melange of fragmented and sheared Franciscan complex rocks.

Comments: Coast Ranges. Includes areas of Franciscan rocks specifically distinguished as melange on the Geologic Map of California. Includes parts of central and eastern Franciscan belts of Blake et al. Franciscan Complex

Age: Mesozoic (66 - 201.3 Ma)

Stratigraphic Name: Franciscan Complex

Description: Chert: Chert with shale interbeds. Chert is thin bedded, closely fractured, and parts along bedding planes; contains tests of radiolaria that range in age from early Jurassic (Tithonian) to Middle Cretaceous (Cenomanian) age (Murchey, 1984); crops out as irregularly shaped bodies as long as 4.5 km. In southern Marin County and parts of San Francisco, chert up to 100 m thick overlies pillow lava and is overlain conformably by a few feet of fine-grained, black shale that grades into overlying graywacke and shale.
