A former Zn-Pb-Ag-Cu-Au mine located in secs. 23 & 26, T17S, R40E (MDM), 1.0 km (0.6 mile) N of Maltese Hill summit), on National Park Service wilderness land (Death Valley National Park/Death Valley Wilderness). Operated during the periods 1920, 1936-1937, 1951 & 1953. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters. Alternate coordinates provided: 36°26'46"N, 117°36'47"W.
Mineralization is hosted in limestone. The ore body is lenticular in form, strikes E and dips 70N. Irregular lenses occur along a series of parallel veins in the mineralized zone 400 feet wide and 1,000 feet in length. The ore occurs as chlorides and chloro-bromides. Mineralization of Ag ores is found along seams, fractures and bedding planes of the limesdtone. Local rocks include Carboniferous marine rocks, unit 2 (SE California Carbonate Assemblage).
Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of a number of shafts and open cuts. The deepest shaft is 80 feet and an open stope exists to a depth of about 80 feet.
Production data are found in: Goodwin, J.C. (1957): 484.
Then dumps were reported to carry 22 ounces Ag/ton. Hand picked ore shipped in 1951 averaged 67.5 ounces Ag, 1.8% Pb, 19% Zn, plus recoverable Cu & Au.
